17 Oct 2006
by the gloomydrear weather banging on the windowpane that
it'd be over by now, but nope, Pilot Summer is still going strong. If
you haven't been reading Fort Saint David's serialization of Erik
Bader's 2001 first novel The Pilot and the Panda, there's never been a
more exciting time to jump on and get into the action. We're putting
things in overdrive here at the FSD offices just to make way for bigger
and better things. So here's what you can expect at
truejersey.com:
PILOT AND THE PANDA, BOOK ONE, CHAPTER THIRTEEN
pages 183-214
The beginning of the second of three Ocean City sequences (the first
was the hearbroken 17 year old Dave in the “Preludium” chapter, where he
met Renee for the first and last time). Drunken boardwalk weirdness
with crazy John and the art school kids! Rich the ski instructor!
Stoned in the Pavillion! Slobber Bob! Log cabin dry leaf memories of
Mary from Medford. Lost in the Surf Mall. BEACH PARTY. Medford
Memories #2: Christine with the fuzzy Christmas sweater, Dinosaur Jr.,
gray Atco days, and the rainy bus stop ("She looked like a sad yellowed
advertisement for a long-forgotten 1950's product"). The first time Dave
ever bought a rose. Stoned beach bum burnouts and theories on THE
DOORS. Beercan beach dawns with Laura and seagulls. Dave decides he's
going to be a poet because he doesn't want a real job.
That should get you through this crummy weather, right? And for your
downtime this weekend, we'll be putting up...
PILOT AND THE PANDA, BOOK ONE, CHAPTER FOURTEEN
pages 215-234
Dave becomes a full-time beach bum, living in OC, NJ for a full week!
And next week we'll crank out FIFTEEN, featuring the story of Dave's
first date with Alice Worth. A highschool classic of unrequited love,
hope, and every teenager's secret desire to run away to Montana and
become a beekeeper.
Plus the guys get chased off of a pier by a guy with a machete. Did we
mention the dude is on acid? Remember, this is the Nineties, people!
After this we'll conclude BOOK ONE with its epic ending: “Crescendo”,
which will be introduced by an ALL-NEW essay by Erik Bader about the
chapter that means more to him than anything he's ever written before
or since. DO NOT MISS IT!
Again, all of us at Fort Saint Davids would like to thank everyone who
has supported us through this crazy project. Please stick around as
the regular serialization of True Jersey, Volume One continues this
winter.
Excelsior!
